New Special Programs and Extended Hours This Year

By Thu T. Pham

From grade-school children to twenty-somethings to the still-young-at-heart crowd, the 2009 season of the Ann Arbor Summer Festival offers some of the most diverse entertainment in Michigan. The festival runs from June 12 to July 5 and is located at different locations on the beautiful University of Michigan campus.

Staples of the festival include major Mainstage headliners including Gladys Knight, Diana Krall and Pink Martini. Other acts include the classical-modern fusion of Juilliard-trained Ahn Trio and Dean and Britta, an indie-pop band performing with a screening of Andy Warhol's silent films.

Less traditional performances include a Beyonce-impersonator, Neal Medlyn and a show featuring tap-dancer, Savion Glover.

Top of the Park will be sure to not disappoint youngsters with special-themed program nights including Superhero Night featuring extreme face-painting by Body Masterpiece artists and a screening of Iron Man.

For the slightly older crowd, the party goes on with the new addition of After Dark @ Top of the Park. Alternating guest DJs will spin while the beverage garden stays open after hours. As always, dancing is encouraged.

Culture-specific performers contribute to the diverse community through artistic displays of their heritage at the festival's Global Parties, which span the continents from a South Asian Mela to a Pan-African celebration.

Don't miss the festival this summer, June 12-July 5, as it transcends culture and age to serve a diverse variety of entertainment tastes.
